After 5 and a half years, 1,053 days of Urlesque, 2 videos with giant things, several awesomely ridiculous cat-related features (aka my life’s work), countless LOLs and meme-ories, I am leaving AOL and Urlesque.
Come Monday, I’m joining the marketing team at Outbrain, a NYC-based startup recently recognized by The Media Kitchen as a content distribution platform to watch in 2011. I’m thrilled for this exciting new step in my career and looking forward to the new challenges it will bring.
As we’ve always said, once an Urlbot, forever an Urlbot, and a piece of my heart will always belong to the team at Urlesque. I’m forever thankful for the opportunities and experience our unique site allowed me — the best of both worlds of working with a small but passionate team in the midst of a big, big company. Never fear — the site lives on! The awesome editors and writers will keep bringing you the very best the web has to offer (follow on Tumblr & go to the site… you know me, always with the plugs).
I also wanted to say a big thank you to all Urlbots past and present for making Urlesque the wonderful site and community that it is today — none of it was possible without you. And to all my friends, colleagues, readers, and peers, thank you for all the support over the (almost 3!) years of the site’s life and I know you’ll join me in watching the team continue to kill it and cheering ‘em on from the sidelines.
Naturally, I thought really long and hard about what video I wanted to include in this post, and really, nothing in my mind is more perfect than ending my tenure with this one:
Inspired by the ‘boomers, my mustache for the URDB book. Be a part of the record!
(I wanted to show my hands so you knew I wasn’t holding it. magic)
GPOYW - Last picture as a “single lady” edition at (of course) The Smith.
Fun fact! Naveen was the last person to see me before Jeff and I got engaged because I bumped into him that night.
(hi new followers coming from the tumblr radar! I promise not to talk about my upcoming nuptials too much!) xo
Templatized, terrible wedding websites are a huge pet peeve of mine so one of my main goals is to have an actually useful and cute wedding site. None of the crappy “how we met” BS. Anyone know of any killer (easy?) website makers or want to make me one?
Right now, I’m OBVI thinking Tumblr. Any other ideas, smarties?
Dear Kelly,
I was a little too drunk to convey my full level of excitement about your news in my texts last night. For this I apologize and present you with my latest PowerPoint creation.
In Taylor we trust,
Joy
In case you only follow me on Tumblr, I’ll let Joy’s fantastic graphic be the first to tell you that I’m engaged! Don’t worry, I’ll try to start a separate (secret?) blog to keep track of weddingish things I like, so no need to unfollow me for fear of that. Unless you’re just tired of me already, in which case, go for it.
BRB — going to take a nap for a few months.
OMG MY FIRST FAN* VIDEO - For some reason I dance each week on the Urlesque Urly Show podcast. Here are my dances altogether.
*okay maybe not fan. my aunt made it, but still!
Does Ben Folds know what ROFL means? Does the co-founder of the Internet know what the Fail Whale is? We took to the Webby Awards red carpet to give a lil Internet Pop Quiz to the web elite.
And no, FML doesn’t mean Facebook Markup Language :D
I love the way this video turned out. I had a lot of fun at the Webby Awards and doing this video. I am in love with Vint Cerf and it still hasn’t sunk in that I’ve met Ben Folds (whose wife is also the cutest and nicest. Not pictured but she got a couple of the questions right that Ben didn’t :)
urdb:
Massively excited for this event. Our lineup features the likes of Kelly Reeves, Elna Baker, Cory Cavin, Todd Lamb, Alex Young, and many more. The night also marks the NYC debut of Kickstarter legend ToTs, the world’s only rapper who rhymes exclusively about potatoes.
All proceeds from the night will go to The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a group that raises funds to combat childhood cancer. Advance tickets (highly recommended) available here.
For some odd reason, I agreed to participate in this month’s URDB event by trying to set a record that involves clogging… something I did when I was young. I have one of my outfits from back then (gonna try to fit into it) and my shoes. I’m scared to practice, lest I annoy my neighbors or scratch up my floor…. so we’ll see how this goes. Like riding a bike?

Good thing I saved those coveralls from high school!
